Canada has one of the highest rates of MS in the world, with 240 cases per 100,000 people, while 30 cases per 100,000 people is considered high. Everyday, more people are diagnosed with MS. The next person could be you, your child, or a friend. Canada spends $139 million in direct cost and $811 million in indirect cost a year on MS.
Now, there is clear and undisputed evidence that people with MS also have a potentially severe condition called CCSVI. As well, the procedure to correct venous malformations, angioplasty, is NOT an experimental procedure. It has been done for years. In fact, if people who do not have MS went to their doctor and it was determined that they had reflux of blood into the brain, they would most likely be referred to a specialist, covered by OHIP, to determine if they needed intervention. Just because we have MS does not mean we should not be tested and treated for other conditions.
Every Canadian should read these two letters: Letter to Ministry and Response from the Ministry
Whether or not there is a causal relationship between the two conditions needs further investigation, but this research can - and should - be done in parallel to the screening for, and treatment of, CCSVI.
Consequently, every Canadian with MS should be screened for CCSVI right away.
Please write to your MP and MPP. We cannot be discriminated against for a pre-existing condition.
